Auditing in challenging times

In these unique and challenging times, our Internal Audit service continues to be in high demand, supporting partners and clients through unprecedented change, including advising on alterations to the control environment and developing our corporate fraud response.

Everyone within our service is currently working from home and for this reason, assessments and interviews will be undertaken by Skype/MS Teams.  You will need to possess the flexibility to support remote induction to the team and to develop effective working relationships with colleagues and clients remotely.

Do I need a qualification?

Whilst a relevant audit or accounting qualification is a requirement, we will also consider candidates with extensive experience working within Internal Audit.   A willingness to learn new things every day is essential, and particularly important is the requirement to be able to maintain excellent customer relationships.

You will be self-motivated, be able to work on their own initative and within a team.  The ability to undertake work to specified timeframes and budgets is crucial.

What is Orbis Internal Audit?

Orbis Internal Audit is a key part of the Orbis Partnership, a collaboration of East Sussex County Council, Brighton and Hove City Council and Surrey County Council, formed to deliver greater value for our councils, residents and customers through the sharing of people, resources and technology. Within Orbis Internal Audit there are five teams; three sovereign based teams (East Sussex County Council, Brighton and Hove City Council and Surrey County Council) and two partnership teams delivering counter-fraud work and ICT audits across all of the partners.

Our service is highly respected across our partner organisations and we have a reputation for bringing a ‘national perspective’ to our work.  We invest heavily in developing our own staff and working practices to ensure the service we provide to our clients continues to be exceptional.

Our Internal Audit function prides itself on providing an independent and objective view on the authorities’ internal control environments and acting as respected critical friend to our clients.

How does partnership working work?

Working across the three Orbis partner authorities (Brighton & Hove City Council, East Sussex County Council and Surrey County Council) and our clients (Horsham District Council, South Downs National Park, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Elmbridge Borough Council), we maximise opportunities for auditors and investigators to work in other organisations, providing an efficient and effective audit service, and opportunities to develop our team.

We support anyone travelling to another partner or customer location and ensure they are met with a professional welcome whenever they are working away from their main place of employment.

What’s the remuneration?

Your contract and terms of employment will be based on those in place at your employing authority, with different employers attracting different pay and benefits.

The Principal Auditor position at East Sussex County Council attracts a salary range of £38,650 - £42,236.

Whilst we are currently working remotely and are continuing to explore remote and flexible working arrangements, over the longer term your main place of work will be Lewes, East Sussex.

In addition to the salary, we offer excellent work/life balance and each employer offers a number of other benefits, including generous leave allocations and pension schemes, flexible working, access to staff discounts and family-friendly & lifestyle benefits.

What support will I get?

We treat professional development very seriously and we have a strong history of developing auditors from outside of the profession, offering support through buddying, mentoring & coaching and on the job training.  We also seek to access all types of professional and personal development opportunities for our staff, including apprenticeship schemes.
